The Wasike’s story is completely inspiring. It’s actually completely amazing.
As soon as I heard the family’s story earlier this year, it broke my heart. Such a senseless act that has forever changed the lives of the Wasike family.
But it doesn’t stop with a senseless act. This weekend the Des Moines community is going to gather for an event to support the Wasike family and show them just how much we care!
A few weeks ago my boss asked if I would be interested in planning an event for a family. I was automatically in when I learned that it was for the Wasike family. A fantastic group of my friends, and also wonderful marketers, have teamed up with Maple Grove United Methodist Church to put on an incredible event to support this family. I feel so blessed to have assisted with planning this event while seeing the community step up firsthand. The response has been incredible!
I hope you will come and join us this Sunday!
The Wasike story:
Mike, a legal immigrant from Kenya, was living in Des Moines and working two jobs to support his wife and children. Then last February, Mike stopped to offer assistance to three teenagers he thought needed his help. Those same teenagers attacked Mike in a car-jacking attempt. Mike was nearly beaten to death.
Today Mike is in a rehabilitation facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma, undergoing intensive therapy. He cannot walk, talk, or see because his brain is severely bruised but there is hope that, in time, he can be restored to health and returned to his family and his home – in Des Moines.
So how can you help?
Support the Wasike family by attending “A Day for Mike.” The event will be held this Sunday, November 17, 2013, from 3 – 6 p.m. at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center-Iowa Events Center. 100% of the proceeds raised from the auction and freewill donations will support the Wasike family’s medical and living expenses.
The event will include:
- Live music from the Waukee Big Band
- Food and cash bar
- Silent and live auctions – The auction items include tickets to the Iowa Wild and Brenton Skating Plaza, restaurant gift cards, an autographed Iowa State football by Paul Rhoads, Wright Service Corp. gift cards, Casey’s pizza gift cards, jewelry and more!
